Messy Church

We’ve had lots of Messy activity this year.

In January we had a Film Night for families and we all enjoyed “The Lego Movie,” with great popcorn and ice cream in the interval.

In February we thought about talking and listening to God like Samuel; building a Temple in the corridor, making blessing boxes, megaphones, ‘head-phone’ biscuits and decorating handkerchiefs, amongst other things.

A tree for Zaccheus to climb sprouted in March and we had a lot of fun catapulting marshmallows and looking through binoculars. We thought about how Zaccheus was changed; butterfly prayers reminded us of this. We also made golden coin biscuits and decorated stones with our names.

In April we thought about an Unforgiving Servant. A bit strange? But this could be us. He ended up in a jail built of cardboard and a bed base!

We were going to have a “Walk in the Park” in May. When the weather looked dubious we had some great activities and a picnic in the garden and Church building instead which was great fun.

Starting back in September we looked at what fruit could grow in us. As it was Harvest time we thanked God for the food we have. God wants us to grow good fruit too; like love, joy, peace, patience and self control. We had a fruit tree and put our fruit prayers on, complete with our fingerprints. “Fruit” to eat and share, joy flags, peace pictures, patience games… and lots more.

At Messy Church we have lots of activities and we worship together with a story from the Bible and singing. The meal we share is sometimes based round the day’s theme – apple crumble and custard for the harvest/fruit session! It is always a meal that as many people as possible can enjoy. This is a great time to have a chat with others as well as meaning the adults don’t need to go home and cook!
